Here are some of the more Frequently Asked Questions:

When is the correct time to plant trees?

Trees are fully dormant usually from mid November straight through to mid April, which is the correct time for planting.

How many plants do I need?

Stocking levels for most forestry material is usually one thousand per acre, but would be calculated by your local forester.

For Hedging the species vary on distances planted apart:

Whitethorn - should be planted at approximately 1 foot spacing’s. (3 per metre single row or 6 in a staggered double row)

Beech - are best planted at one and a half feet spacing’s (2 per metre single row or 4 per metre in a staggered double row)

Laurel - should be planted at one plant every two feet

What type of Trees do I need?

For Forestry plantations, your local qualified forester will guide you on which species best suit your conditions after a site inspection. For landscaping and hedging we would be happy to advise you on species dependant on your ground conditions, wind exposure etc. For basic advice read more

What size trees can I get?

We have a large variety of sizes in all species for landscaping and hedging. Hedging plants are sold at different sizes of two, three and four feet heights to suit all preferences. For Forestry we supply all specified sizes for grant approval in both conifers and broadleaves. Read more…

Can my order be delivered?

We use our own lorries, trucks & vans and also our own drivers who have years of experience in handling Trees.

Orders over €500 can be delivered to a convenient pre-arranged point and time depending on driver’s route for the day. Customers will be contacted at the latest the evening before to confirm details.

Orders less than €500 must be collected from Shillelagh base.

How can I pay for my order?

Orders must be accompanied by full payment. Payment can be made by cheque, credit card, Laser card, cash, postal order or bank draft. Full T&C …

When plants are delivered how long can they keep before planting?

All our plants are presented in co-extruded forestry bags. These high quality bags help keep living plants protected from the elements for up to three weeks depending on air temperatures. Plants should be stored in these bags and kept upright until ready for planting.

What is “Improved” Sitka Spruce?

Improved Sitka Spruce trees are grown from seed collected from trees, which have been selected because of the desirable characteristics of their lineage, such as fast growth rates, timber density, straightness, stiffness and low incidence of knots. Read more…

What trees are native species?

Native species are indigenous to Ireland and not introduced from another country. A large variety of our stock would be of native origin, from seed collected by our staff at registered areas. Species native to Ireland include Oak, Ash, Alder, Birch, Rowan, and Thorn. Read more…

What Native species can be used in the ACRES Scheme?

We have available a variety of Native Trees and Hedging suitable for the ACRES scheme including Alder, Birch, Hazel, Oak, Scots Pine, Mountain Ash and Whitethorn. Read more…

What are acceptable origins and provenances for Forestry?

It’s believed that plants which seed originated from certain regions not just in Ireland, but also Britain and Europe are best suited for planting here as they are from a similar climate. All of None-So-Hardy’s forestry species are from such area’s and are all certified for grant aid and forestry approval.

Do you supply Christmas Trees?

Yes, we supply Nordmann Fir, Noble Fir, Norway Spruce and Lodgepole Pine for Christmas tree planting. Please contact our sales office for more details.
